ESSAY 60
THE
"RELIGION IS THE OPIATE OF THE PEOPLE"
MYTH
What is reality? If God is Ultimate Reality and his
creation is reality, then worship of God is rational.
However, if one is involved in a false religion, it is
both a bondage and an "opiate," or psychic drug that numbs
the conscience.
One such false religion is atheism. Atheism is the
opiate of the fool. The fool has said in his heart, "There is
no God." (The word "fool" here is used in a technical sense
and not as name calling--see Glossary).
In atheism, one becomes his own god. Being one's own god
allows one to make his own rules. It is another god of con-
venience that allows the believer to live a rebellious or
sensual lifestyle since he does not have to answer to any
ultimate authority. He only answers to himself. The belief
that there is no God serves as a psychic (mental) drug that
either deadens and/or reeducates the conscience in order that
the believer can enjoy his sin, without the pain of a violat-
ed conscience.
The believer may not be able to verbalize the rationale,
since he is governed by the rationalization of atheism on a
conscious level and believes in God only on an unconscious
level. (See my work on the conscience in ESTEEM).
